Unit 3 – Place Value and Decimals
What should you be able to do at the end of this unit? Check it off when you are an expert!
Place Value
I can recognize that a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as the place to the right and 1/10 of the place to the left.
Powers of Ten
I can use exponents to represent powers of 10.
When multiplying or dividing any decimal by a power of 10, I can use patterns to justify the number of zeros in the product.
When multiplying or dividing any decimal by a power of 10, I can explain how the power of 10 relates to the placement of the decimal point.
Read, Write, and Compare Decimals
I can read decimals to the thousandths in word, numerical, and expanded form.
I can write decimals to the thousandths in word, numerical, and expanded form.
I can compare decimals to the thousandths place based on the meaning of the digit placement in the number.
I can use symbols (<, =, >) to record the results of decimal comparisons.
Rounding
I can explain how to use place value and what digits to look at to round decimals to a given place.
I can use the value of the digit to the right of the place to be rounded to figure out whether the number rounds up or stays the same.
I can round decimals to any place.

Measurement
I can convert measurements within the same measurement system, customary and standard, in the context of multi-step, real world problems.
I can justify how the base ten model supports the conversion in the metric system (Example: 100 cm = 1m).
I can convert units of measure within the same system (Example: 1 ft = 12 inches; 3 feet = 1 yard; 1.2 cm = 12 mm).
